Jumping In Head First

This is the first time I’ve ever actually written my own blog. I follow a wide variety of other peoples’ thinking, and have posted replies to many of them, but I’ve never done one of my own. One of my favorite blogs is the one written by Two Writing Teachers and I check it often. Last night I found the Slice Of Live Writing project post and decided to jump in. So, here is my Slice of Life blog.

I teach eighth grade language arts at a grade 3-8 center for TAG students. I’ve been teaching for a long time, longer that I can believe I’ve actually been doing this. Our Gifted Center is a relatively new concept for my area; last school year was our first year as a stand alone program and we are the only self-contained gifted magnet in the area. I love my school and the unique opportunity it affords me. The middle school department is small, one teacher per content at each level, so I have four grade 8 team mates in the other disciplines and two other language arts teachers in my content  area department. We are in the unique position of  creating curriculum that differentiates for the needs of our TAG learners while still meeting city curriculum requirements and the state standards of learning, and figuring it out as we go. It’s challenging and exciting and difficult all at the same time and I am constantly looking for new ways to expand and enrich the curricula we are creating.

I hope that participating in Slice of Life posts will lead me to new ways of thinking about teaching writing and reading. I have no idea where this will lead me, but I am excited to start the journey!
